Observations & Experiences of Sexism
Instructions
You will be asked to complete 14 journal entries over the course of 6 weeks. The entries will be detailed events of encounters with sexism.
In your journal entry, emphasize (1) your observations, and (2) your reactions and perceptions to these everyday events. Please note details such as: are you observing a middle aged white female, or a teenage Asian American male? It is helpful to note the approximate age, race, and gender of each person you mention in your journal, so do your best when describing available demographic information.
Also note:
what happened
where it happened
when it took place (such as was it on a Saturday night? On your Tuesday lunch break?)
with whom you were with
your relationship with the individuals involved (sister? stranger? friend?)
When writing down your observations, be sure to be detailed in your comments on the manner and way in which people interact. For example, if someone makes a comment sarcastically, or whispers certain words, be sure to note the sarcasm or volume change. Please note both subtle and blatant events. The entries should be about a full paragraph/half-page in length.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: “May I write about things I see on TV or in the movies?”
A: No. This is about your everyday interactions, and not an analysis of music, television, or movies.
Q: "May I write about incidents from the past?"
A: If there is a memorable incident within the past 6 months, you may use it as an entry, however, the researchers are most interested in your current and recent experiences.
